In the spring of 1990 – between the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and German reunification on October 3, 1990 – the first package tours from the GDR set off for Mallorca. Part of the travel price is paid in GDR marks, the other in West German marks. Long queues form in front of the travel agencies, even though a week in Mallorca costs around two months’ salary per person. Mallorca is a place of longing for many East Germans, known from the colourful postcards of their West German relatives. The first Interflug plane takes off from Berlin Schönefeld on April 3, 1990 and flies via Dresden to Mallorca. The travelers are greeted at the airport in Palma de Mallorca like guests of state – the Spanish tourism industry is hoping for a new upswing. The short film HIMMEL WIE SEIDE-VOLLER ORANGEN reconstructs a travelogue from research, contemporary press articles and interviews with contemporary witnesses. A collage of animated postcards, documents and vacation photos. A report from a time full of comical, tragic and embarrassing encounters – a report about the freedom to travel, the hunger for color and the desire to belong.
